51̽»¨ Treks: Job Shadowing Program

51̽»¨ Treks is designed to assist students in their career exploration and development by matching them with hosts working in a career field of interest. Students who participate in 51̽»¨ Treks will be able to:

  • Determine how this experience fits in with their career development plan.
  • Clarify their career goals and assess if this is a career that they wish to pursue.
  • Develop a better understanding of the day-to-day aspects involved in a job. 

51̽»¨ Treks Student Role

Students who attend 51̽»¨ Trek events have the unique opportunity to learn more about a desired career field for part time work, internships, or jobs after graduation. For students who desire a specific 51̽»¨ Trek event that targets their major of interest, please contact Sofie Swink.

Candidates may remove themselves from a job shadowing opportunity through the Handshake system up to 48 hours prior to the event. A cancellation occurring after this time will be considered a no-show. Students who no-show will have their Handshake account temporarily blocked until an apology letter is written to the employer.

  • Sign up for a 51̽»¨ Trek / Job Shadow event via .
  • Research the company, meet with 51̽»¨ Coach, and review reminder emails.
  • Attend the event and actively engage with employers by asking questions, networking with teams members, and professionally presenting yourself as a motivated & curious student
  • Complete an online survey about your experience after the job shadow.

51̽»¨ Treks employers play a key role in helping students explore career paths and understand workplace expectations. Your involvement creates meaningful learning experiences that support their career development.

  • Provide students with a safe learning environment focusing on career exploration
  • Learn more about potential candidates
  • Provide information about the organization
  • Prepare a schedule of activities for the student(s)
  • Complete an online survey after the job shadow

In-Person or Virtual Format for 51̽»¨ Treks

51̽»¨ Treks experiences can be set up as either on-site job shadowing or in a virtual format.  Virtual experiences are not limited to job shadowing. They include conducting informational interviews with our students in a group session, or an informational interview with a UNT 51̽»¨ Center staff member about your organization and career.  51̽»¨ Treks is designed so your organization will gain brand recognition and students can learn more about your organization’s mission and its contribution to your industry.  You also can share tips, tricks and other advice with UNT students who are interested in one day working in your industry.

The 51̽»¨ Center team works with employers to offer guidance on target colleges and majors, scheduling, marketing, and will work to implement the type of 51̽»¨ Treks experience you feel is the best fit for your organization. 

Suggested Job Shadow Activities

Job shadows are most impactful when students can see, ask, and reflect. The activities below offer opportunities for hands‑on learning and intentional career conversations.

  • Tour of the workplace
  • Observe day-to-day activities
  • Staff meetings
  • Client interactions/meetings
  • Small hands-on projects
  • Meet with other members of the department
  • View important reports and/or data
  • Review organization vision and mission statement
  • Allow time for students to conduct an informational interview(s)
  • Debrief at the end of each day
